Palm Springs vs. Rancho Mirage: Location

Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage are located in central Coachella Valley. Palm Springs is three times larger than Rancho Mirage and has well over double the population. Its larger size and population gives Palm Springs a much different feel than Rancho Mirage. Palm Springs hosts more visitors, more nightlife, and more activity.

Rancho Mirage is much quieter in comparison, with its smaller size and mid-valley location lending a small town feel to the community and the country clubs within it.

Downtown Rancho Mirage is 11 miles southeast of downtown Palm Springs. The Palm Springs International Airport is three miles east of downtown Palm Springs (a 5-minute drive), and nine miles northwest of Rancho Mirage (an 18-minute drive). 

Of the two hospitals in Coachella Valley, one is in Rancho Mirage, and the other is in Palm Springs.

Wind is a big consideration when buying a golf course home. Palm Springs is located along the San Gorgonio Pass, which is a wind tunnel between the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains. Anything north of Vista Chino can be especially windy, but golf course real estate in southern Palm Springs (near the base of the mountains) generally receives less wind.

Rancho Mirage runs along the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains and is better protected from the winds compared to other surrounding cities. Even though the climate is very nice in both locations, the wind blows about 2 mph harder in Palm Springs vs. Rancho Mirage during peak season. There will usually be more wind in Palm Springs than Rancho Mirage, especially later in the day.
